ITIN Applicant Guide

How to Track Your ITIN Application Status

Sent in your Form W-7 and waiting? Here's exactly how to check where your ITIN application stands, how long it should take, and who to call at the IRS.

Quick answer

The IRS does not offer an online ITIN tracker.

To check status you either wait for an official notice in the mail (CP565, CP566, or CP567), call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 (U.S.) or +1-267-941-1000 (international), or ask the Certified Acceptance Agent who submitted your application.

IRS ITIN processing timeline

Most ITIN applications take 7 to 11 weeks from the day the IRS receives your complete package. Peak tax season (January–April) and international mail add time.

Week 0

IRS receives your W-7 package

The clock starts when the IRS ITIN Operation in Austin, TX physically opens your envelope — not the day you dropped it in the mail.

Weeks 1–6

Document review

An examiner verifies your Form W-7, your identity document (passport or supporting docs), and your attached federal tax return or exception documentation.

Weeks 7–11

Decision & notice mailed

The IRS mails either a CP565 (ITIN assigned), a CP566 (more info needed), or a CP567 (application rejected). International mail can add 2–4 weeks.

How to call the IRS about your ITIN

The IRS will only give a status update after your application has been on file for at least 7 weeks (or 9–11 weeks during peak season). Calling earlier isn't useful — the examiner hasn't touched it yet.

Have this ready before you dial

IRS notices to watch for in the mail

Every ITIN application ends with an official IRS letter. Which one you receive tells you exactly where you stand.

CP565

ITIN assigned

Your ITIN was issued. The number is printed on the notice — keep it for your tax records.

CP566

More information needed

The IRS needs additional or corrected documentation. Respond within 45 days with exactly what the notice asks for, or the application is closed.

CP567

Application rejected

Your ITIN application was denied. The notice lists the reason — the most common causes are unsigned W-7 forms, missing tax returns, or documents that don't meet IRS certification rules.

When to actually worry

Under 7 weeks: normal — do nothing yet.

7–11 weeks: if nothing has arrived, call the IRS at the number above.

Over 14 weeks and no letter: ask the IRS examiner to open a trace. It's usually a mail issue, not a rejection.

CP566 in your mailbox: respond fast. You have 45 days before the file is closed and you have to reapply from scratch.
